Mixamo to VRM converter: rig mapped, fingers too

Drop a Mixamo character exported as FBX Binary with skin and get a VRM for VSeeFace, Warudo and VNyan. The mixamorig bones are mapped onto the VRM humanoid, down to the fingers, and the textures come along. Free, no account.

Character or clip: Mixamo hands out both

Mixamo exports two different things that look the same from the outside. A character download carries the mesh and the skeleton; a motion download carries the skeleton and the clip, and no mesh. The model converter needs a mesh, so a clip dropped here is refused as RIG_WITHOUT_MESH and offered the animation route instead. A clip you want on an avatar belongs on the FBX to VRMA converter, where it is retargeted onto the VRM humanoid and plays on any VRM.

Pick FBX Binary in Mixamo's export dialog. The text form of FBX cannot be read, by this converter or by most importers.

A static mesh? Mixamo rigs it for free

A VRM needs bones, so a model without a skeleton is refused as NO_ARMATURE; that is common with game rips and AI-generated models. Upload the mesh to Mixamo, let its auto-rigger place the markers, download the result as FBX Binary with skin, and drop that here. The face does not come with the rig: expressions need shape keys in the source file.

Mixamo bone names the converter maps

The mixamorig: prefix is removed before a name is matched, so the rows hold whether the file writes mixamorig:Hips, mixamorigHips or plain Hips. Left side shown; the right side is the same.

Mixamo boneVRM humanoid bone

mixamorig:LeftForeArmleftLowerArm
mixamorig:LeftHandleftHand
mixamorig:LeftUpLegleftUpperLeg
mixamorig:LeftLegleftLowerLeg
mixamorig:LeftFootleftFoot

Beyond the trunk and limbs, LeftShoulder and RightShoulder become the VRM shoulders, LeftToeBase and RightToeBase the toes, and the five finger chains resolve joint by joint: LeftHandThumb1 to 3 are the thumb's proximal, intermediate and distal bones, and index, middle, ring and pinky follow the same shape. Both spellings of the prefix, with the colon and fused, read the same.

What can go wrong with a Mixamo file

A conversion that cannot finish tells you which of these it hit.

RIG_WITHOUT_MESH

The file holds a skeleton and no character: a motion download, not a model.

Take the offered animation route, or download the character with skin if the model was the point.

IMPORT_FAILED

The FBX could not be read; a text (ASCII) FBX is the usual cause.

Re-export as FBX Binary, which Mixamo's own dialog offers.

NO_TEXTURES

The rig converted, but every texture the file names is missing: a model file points at its images by name and does not contain them.

Zip the FBX with its texture folder and drop the zip.

NO_ARMATURE

No skeleton in the file: a static mesh.

Rig it with Mixamo's auto-rigger and download as FBX Binary with skin, then convert that.

Frequently asked questions

Converting a Mixamo character: the steps

Download the character from Mixamo as FBX Binary with skin, drop it on this page, preview the result in 3D and download the .vrm. The bones are mapped and the textures come along without any renaming on your side.

Can I use a Mixamo animation on a VRM?

Yes, through the FBX to VRMA converter: the clip is retargeted onto the VRM humanoid, so the .vrma plays on any VRM, in VMagicMirror, Unity through UniVRM, or the viewer here. Open the FBX to VRMA converter →

RIG_WITHOUT_MESH on a Mixamo file: what it means

Because it is a motion download: skeleton and clip, no geometry. The converter recognises the shape and offers the animation route.

Do I have to rename the mixamorig bones?

No. The prefix is stripped before matching, and the fused spelling three.js writes reads the same as Blender's colon.

Which VRM version comes out?

VRM 0.x, which VSeeFace, VNyan and Warudo read. If an app wants 1.0, the version converter switches the file. Open the VRM version converter →

Does it cost anything?

No. Every tool on Shapeweld is free, and there is no account.
