Blender to VRM converter: the .blend itself

Drop the Blender project, not an export. It is opened in Blender on our server, every collection is enabled, the armature is mapped onto the VRM humanoid, and the result is shown in 3D before you download it. Free, no account.

Opened, not imported

Because the project is opened as it is, what converts is what the file contains: every object, including those in hidden or excluded collections, which are enabled before the export. Delete what should not be in the avatar before uploading. Images packed into the file come along; images linked from disk do not, unless the folder is zipped with the .blend.

Rigify: the DEF bones are the skeleton

A Rigify control rig has hundreds of bones, most of them controls. Only the DEF- deform bones carry weights, so those are what the converter maps; the controls are ignored. Auto-Rig Pro's .l and .r suffixes and a plain Hips, Spine, Head armature are read by the same rules.

Blender bone names the converter maps

The deform skeleton Rigify generates, left side shown; the right side is the same name with .R. A Blender character rigged with Mixamo, Unity or plain names is read by the general rules; this table is the one specific to Blender.

Rigify DEF- boneVRM humanoid bone
DEF-spine(pelvis segment)hips
DEF-spine.001(lower spine)spine
DEF-spine.002(chest)chest
DEF-spine.003(upper chest)upperChest
DEF-spine.004(neck)neck
DEF-spine.005(second neck segment)VRM has a single neck bone; this one stays in the chain outside the humanoid
DEF-spine.006(head)head
DEF-shoulder.L(shoulder)leftShoulder
DEF-upper_arm.L(upper arm)leftUpperArm
DEF-forearm.L(forearm)leftLowerArm
DEF-hand.L(hand)leftHand
DEF-thigh.L(thigh)leftUpperLeg
DEF-shin.L(shin)leftLowerLeg
DEF-foot.L(foot)leftFoot
DEF-toe.L(toe)leftToes
MCH-torso.parent(mechanism bone)control, MCH- and ORG- bones are not part of the humanoid

Eye.L and Eye.R take the eye slots when the character has them, and the Rigify finger chains, DEF-f_index.01.L through DEF-f_pinky.03.L with the thumb, resolve to the VRM finger bones. Shape keys become VRM expressions under their own names, and the ones named like ARKit or VRoid shapes are wired to the standard expressions.

What can go wrong with a Blender file

A conversion that cannot finish tells you which of these it hit.

NO_TEXTURES

Every image the materials use is linked from disk and was not in the upload.

Pack the images into the file (File › External Data › Pack Resources) or zip the .blend with its texture folder.

IMPORT_FAILED

The file could not be opened: a newer Blender version than the server runs, or a damaged file.

Save the project from Blender 4.5 or earlier and upload again.

RIG_DRIVES_LITTLE

The armature moves almost none of the mesh: the weights are on another armature or missing.

Parent the mesh to the armature with automatic weights, or pick the armature that carries the weights, and upload again.

UNMAPPED_REQUIRED_BONES

A required humanoid bone could not be found by name.

Name the hips, spine, head, arms and legs after any convention the converter knows (Rigify, Mixamo, Unity) and upload again; the page lists what was missing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a .blend to VRM directly?

Yes. Drop the project; it is opened in Blender on the server and written as a VRM. There is nothing to install.

Why did my model come out without textures?

The images are linked from your disk and were not in the upload. Pack them into the file or zip the project with its texture folder.

Does it understand Rigify?

Yes. The DEF- deform bones are mapped; the control bones are ignored.

My character is in a hidden collection.

It converts anyway: every collection is enabled before the export. Delete what should not be in the avatar.

Which Blender version runs on the server?

4.5. A file saved by a newer release may not open; save it from 4.5 or earlier.

Do shape keys become expressions?

Yes, under their own names, and the standard-named ones are wired to the VRM expressions.

Does it cost anything?

No. Every tool on Shapeweld is free, and there is no account.
