Free online PLY viewer

Drop a .ply and see what the scanner or the script wrote: a mesh, or a cloud of points, with the colour each vertex carries. Read in your browser, uploaded nowhere.

How to open a PLY

  1. Drop the .ply on the page. ASCII, binary little-endian and binary big-endian are all read; the header says which and the panel repeats it.
  2. Look at the panel first: triangles means a mesh, points only means a point cloud, drawn as dots. Colours are used when the vertices have them.
  3. Orbit and zoom. If the scan lies on its side, the Z-up / Y-up button turns it: PLY records no orientation and scanners disagree.

Mesh or points

A PLY declares its own elements and properties in the header, so one file may hold faces, another only vertices. Scanners and photogrammetry tools write both. A cloud with normals is lit; one without is flat dots. Per-vertex colour is the format's strength and the reason research code prefers it.

What is not here

No textures by image file: the format has no standard way to name one, and the few exporters that try are not read. No materials, no skeleton, no animation. A point cloud cannot be converted to a mesh on this site; that is reconstruction, done in MeshLab or CloudCompare.

Frequently asked questions

Can a scan become a VRM avatar?

Not from the PLY. A scan is a surface with no bones; it has to be cleaned, retopologised and rigged in a 3D tool before the FBX to VRM converter can map it.

My scan opens as dots. Is that right?

Yes: the file holds vertices and no faces. The viewer draws exactly what is in it. To get a surface, reconstruct one in MeshLab or CloudCompare.

Why no colour?

The vertices carry none. Colour in a PLY lives per vertex; a model painted with textures was saved without them.

What unit is it in?

PLY has no unit field. The numbers are shown as they are; a scan in millimetres reads as large numbers.

How large a file opens?

Up to 300 MB. A binary file of that size holds a few million points; text files take longer to read.

Is the file uploaded?

No. The browser reads it from your disk and draws it with WebGL.

Need it as a mesh format?

A PLY with faces converts to GLB, FBX or OBJ on the PLY to GLB converter and its siblings. A point cloud is refused there, not silently emptied.
