Free online VOX viewer
Drop a .vox from MagicaVoxel. The page draws the filled cells with their palette colours, counts them, and lays out a multi-model scene as the file arranges it.
How to open a VOX
- Drop the .vox on the page. Files from current MagicaVoxel (format version 200) and older releases (150) both open.
- Orbit and zoom. The model already stands upright: MagicaVoxel's Z is drawn as up, so there is no axis switch here. A scene of several models is drawn as arranged.
- Read the panel: models in the file, filled voxels, the grid as X × Y × Z, and how many of the 255 palette colours are used.
What a VOX holds
A grid of at most 256 cells a side; each filled cell is one byte, an index into a palette of 255 colours. There is no texture and no normal per voxel, which keeps the files tiny. Newer files also hold a scene graph, layers and material settings for MagicaVoxel's own renderer; the viewer uses the colours and the placement and ignores glass, metal and emission.
Other .vox files
Other voxel tools use the same three letters for unrelated formats. This page reads the MagicaVoxel one, recognised by the text VOX at the start of the file, and not Qubicle .qb, Goxel .gox, Voxlap .vxl or Minecraft schematics.
Frequently asked questions
The materials look flat.
MagicaVoxel's material settings drive its own renderer. The viewer shows the palette colours only.
Can I get a mesh out?
Export OBJ or PLY from MagicaVoxel, then use the viewers and converters here.
Does it open old files?
Yes, format versions 150 and 200.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser.
Can a voxel model become an avatar?
Only after it is exported as a mesh, rigged and textured; the .vox itself has no skeleton.
From voxels to a mesh
Export an OBJ from MagicaVoxel and open it in the OBJ viewer, or convert it on the OBJ to GLB pair.
