Free online USDZ viewer

Drop a .usdz. The package is unzipped in your browser and its stage read; a text-encoded layer draws with its materials, a binary one is refused with a note and a link to the converter.

How to open a USDZ

  1. Drop the .usdz on the page. It is unzipped and read in a background thread; a file that takes longer than 30 seconds is stopped and you are told.
  2. The model appears with its materials and textures. The panel lists the encoding, the up axis and unit the stage declares, and the triangle, object and material counts.
  3. Read the notes under the counts: they name what the file holds that is not drawn, such as a skeleton, lights, cameras, variants or a shader that is not a preview surface.

Text and binary USD

A USDZ is a zip of USD layers and textures. A layer may be text (.usda) or binary (.usdc); most files made on a phone or by a scanning app are binary. Reading the binary form needs the USD library itself, which does not run in a browser, so this page reads the text form and says plainly when it meets the other. The converter on the server reads both.

Limits

UsdPreviewSurface materials are drawn; MaterialX and renderer-specific networks are not. Skeletons and animation are listed, not played. Files over 100 MB are refused.

Frequently asked questions

Can a USDZ become a VRM?

When the stage holds a rigged humanoid with blend shapes, yes, in two steps: USDZ to GLB here, then GLB to VRM. A scanned object or a product model has no skeleton to map.

It says the file is binary.

Most USDZ files are. The viewer cannot read them in the browser, but the USDZ to GLB converter can, and the result opens in the GLB viewer.

Is the size right?

Yes: the stage declares metersPerUnit and an up axis, and both are applied.

Does it play animation?

No. A skeleton or animation in the file is named in the notes and left still.

Is the file uploaded?

No. The package is unzipped and read in your browser.

Will it look like AR Quick Look?

Close for preview-surface materials. Lighting is the viewer's own, not a room.

Read the binary ones too

The USDZ to GLB converter runs the USD library on the server, reads text and binary layers alike, and hands back a .glb that opens in any viewer.
